Nurses in Duluth negotiating a labor contract with a local hospital say a proposed code of conduct could be used to silence or intimidate employees.
The code proposed by St. Luke’s Hospital bans inappropriate behavior, such as profanity or sexual advances. It also prohibits overt behaviors, such as verbal outbursts or “quietly exhibiting uncooperative attitudes during routine activities.” Examples include a condescending voice or impatience with reasonable questions.
The nurses bargaining unit chairwoman Cindy Prout says if a nurse was strongly advocating for a patient, it could be interpreted in the wrong manner and the employee would be subject to discipline.
The Duluth News Tribune says the union representing more than 400 registered nurses is in the final round of negotiations Tuesday.
