Name: Nikki Johnson Business: Noms by Nikki
Tell us about Noms by Nikki I opened Noms by Nikki, a custom dessert business, in May 2011. I specialize in custom cakes, cake pops and cookies but I can make anything! I even have my first wedding cake coming up in April. I love internet memes, the ICanHasCheezburger Cats in particular, hence the name! (Nom is an expression of eating, or sound thereof).
What inspired you to open your business? I was laid off from my job of 6+ years at AOL after returning from maternity leave and I had a few months to think about what I wanted to do with my life. My love for baking and the desire to stay home with my daughter, Molly, led me to take a Wilton class at Michaels. I learned so much from that class that I decided to open my own business! Since then I have taught myself everything I know from either watching tutorials on YouTube or researching techniques on the web.
What has been your biggest unexpected challenge? My biggest challenge is handling time management. I cannot decorate cakes and watch my toddler at the same time! Therefore I often work late at night or during naps.
How do you balance family and business? A lot of planning ahead! Most of my orders are for Fridays and Saturdays so as soon as Wednesdays roll around I start my shopping and prepping. Molly tags along! And as I mentioned above, I take full advantage of her naps!
When you are really stressed, you are most likely to ______________________ Hit the gym. Theres nothing better than a hardcore sweat session at the gym to get all my stress out.
A piece of advise for other Moms interested in opening a business Stay organized! Balancing my SuperNova Mom Blog, my business and my family takes a lot of organization and planning ahead. I couldnt live without my Google calendar that I share with my husband. Another piece of advice: do what you love! If you arent happy with your career path, change it! Life is too short to spend everyday miserable.
