A few years ago, the use of Picture Archiving and Communication System or PACS is limited to several basic purposes of storing and archiving medical images. With the PACS data storage now becoming more and more advanced, there are several added functionalities and more features to enjoy.
PACS can now be used as part of an integrated medical imaging platform. Several commonly known solutions including Hospital Information System (HIS), Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Practice Management Software, and Radiology Information System (RIS) are using the same DICOM medical imaging format, which means integrating PACS with these systems can be done without hassle.
Of course, the diagnostic workflow can also be improved since diagnostic results and related medical images can now be accessed within seconds from capture. Once the images are acquired and stored in the storage server, medical personnel – mainly doctors and physicians – can quickly access the necessary medical images from any remote terminal no matter where they are. This means proper analysis can be conducted quickly and patients can receive the necessary treatments right away.
We can expect more advanced features to be added to PACS in the future. Make sure the medical image storage system you plan on using can be updated as new features are introduced.
