Vitamin B12 is a nutrient found naturally in animal products such as meat, fish, and eggs. The nutrient is perhaps best known for its relationship with pernicious anemia, a form of anemia caused by B12 deficiency, which is caused by impaired absorption of B12 from the gut.

For some time, there has been specific interest in the role B12 plays in brain function. In particular, B12 deficiency is believed to play a potential role in declining brain function (cognitive impairment) often seen in aging.

One of the proposed mechanisms concerns homocysteine, an amino acid that is linked with adverse effects on health, including cardiovascular issues such as heart disease and stroke.

Many people want to enter the phlebotomy career and get one of phlebotomy jobs and wonder how long it takes to become a phlebotomy technician. The good news is that it is a medical branch easier to enter if you get a proper training. This does not mean that the path to your career as a phlebotomy technician will be effortless, because education and training will require a lot of time and some money investment as well. But in less than two years, you can work in the field, which is not something you can say about all the jobs of health care industry.

In the past year, three landmark clinical trials have shown that a daily dose of the antiretroviral medication Truvada can protect individuals from infection with H.I.V. — a significant discovery, given the failure so far of all efforts to develop a vaccine against the virus.

Now researchers in San Francisco and Miami are planning to test this prevention strategy, called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, in a pilot study supported by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers will soon recruit up to 500 uninfected men who have sex with men, especially those considered to be at greatest risk of infection, such as younger gay men and, in particular, African-Americans.

The men will be asked to take Truvada daily, and the researchers will monitor their compliance with the regimen, their sexual behavior and their health status. A
